US Vice President Joe Biden says the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City "must be protected" as fighting rages nearby.

The statement came as UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asks Israel to do everything in its power to safeguard civilians in Gaza and suggested an immediate humanitarian halt.

Israel has accused Hamas of maintaining an Al-Shifa control centre, which both the hospital and Hamas deny.

The World Health Organisation has warned that Gaza's largest hospital is "nearly a cemetery," with dead stacking up inside and outside.

The UN states that owing to a lack of power, dozens of preterm newborns and 45 renal patients in need of dialysis cannot be adequately treated.
The Israeli military claims it is "coordinating the transfer of incubators from an Israeli hospital to Gaza."
Following the Hamas onslaught on 7 October, in which 1,200 people were murdered and another 200 were held captive, Israel began bombing Gaza.
According to the Hamas-run health ministry, over 11,000 people have been murdered in Gaza since then, with over 4,500 of them being children.
