NPP Never Neglected Western North Region, I Told Former President John Mahama, Governance of Continuity Is What I Told Him - Sefwi Wiawso Manhene

Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II, the paramount chief of the Sefwi Wiawso traditional area, presented two items to the former President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, during his visit to the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council on his tour in the Western North Region. It is a customary tradition to pay homage to the overlord or highest stool when one is on the land within their jurisdiction. This protocol is observed by various individuals, including businessmen, politicians, civil servants, and religious leaders, as they respectfully introduce their presence, present their agenda, and seek ideas from the Traditional Authorities. Additionally, it serves as a platform for traditional leaders to voice their grievances, share ideas, and offer blessings.

On December 13, 2023, the former President and flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), one of Ghana's prominent political parties, followed the same tradition during a two-day tour in the newly created Western North Region and Sefwi Wiawso Traditional area. The Overlord of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional area expressed his desire for the restoration of some traditional political powers that the state has taken away from traditional leaders, leading to challenges in administering their chiefdoms or communities and resulting in recalcitrance and deviancy in the communities.

Furthermore, Katakyie indicated that the Western North Region was established by Nana Akuffo Addo and the NPP government. Unfortunately, the President has not completed all developmental projects in the region to allow it to compete with other regions like Ashanti and Greater Accra. The paramount chief expressed appreciation for the creation of the region but appealed to the former President to continue development even though it wasn't initiated by his government. Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II clarified that he did not imply that the NPP government solely created the region without developing it.

Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II and other traditional leaders in the Western North Region consistently express gratitude to Nana Akuffo Addo for taking the bold step to create the region and ensure its development. Notable developments include bringing governmental departments closer to the people through the establishment of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), Regional Security Headquarters, Military Barracks, Regional Health Directorate, Regional Education, Regional Agriculture, Regional Forestry, construction of major highways, ongoing construction of regional capital town roads and feeder roads, state housing, Regional House of Chiefs, Regional Lands Commission, and more.

It is an undeniable fact that no government has been able to meet all developmental needs and projects of the people in a region or state. Governance involves continuity, but sometimes there is a lack of continuity in our part of the world, leading to the abandonment of projects simply because they were not initiated by the current government. Moreover, it is a fact that all governments in Ghana, including dictators or those who came to power through coup d'état, have undertaken developmental projects or contributed to the development of the state.
