How to Shazam Music from the Menu Bar on Your Mac

In macOS Sonoma 14.2, Apple included several new controls for Shazam music identification, which is now more integrated into the Mac operating system than ever before. Here's how to enable it in your Mac's menu bar and Control Centre.

Shazam is an Apple-owned popular service that can identify the titles and lyrics of songs, music videos, TV series, and other media by just listening to and decoding whatever is playing.

Following years of Siri integration, Apple purchased Shazam in 2018 and incorporated it as a system-level music recognition capability into iOS and iPadOS. The same degree of integration has now arrived on the Mac with macOS 14.2.

Previously, you had to use the Shazam software for macOS to add Shazam to your Mac's menu bar, or you could ask Siri to identify a song. There are now two additional ways to access Shazam that are embedded into the system.

Shazam may be prompted to begin listening to the presently playing music by using the Shazam menu bar item and the Control Centre button. The dropdown selection also contains a history of any songs you've identified before utilizing the function.

Click the title of a song to open it in Shazam on the web. Click the music icon to launch the song in the Music app. To remove an item, click the trash symbol and confirm the process by selecting remove Song. This removes the song from your Shazam history on any devices that have the Music Recognition option enabled in the iCloud sync settings.

How to Include Shazam on Your Mac's Menu Bar

Select System Settings from the Apple menu in your Mac's menu bar....
In the side column, click Control Centre.
Toggle the switches adjacent to Show in Menu Bar and/or Show in Control Centre in the Music Recognition section.

Remember that you may ask Siri what music is playing on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod, and Mac, and the results of these questions will display in your Music Recognition listening history.
